Harriet’s tip
If you have the space, plant these in different areas of the garden to encourage wildlife in all pockets. These can also be grown in pots, but the watering will need to be managed slightly different. Protect these Dahlias with a heavy layer of mulch over the winter and if you live in a colder area of the UK, ensure to dig up and bring inside over the colder months.

What are Peat free Houseplants?
Harriets Plants is the first and only 100% peat free plant nursery in the UK.
Peat free plants are so important in reducing the carbon footprint of the plant and also to save the peat bogs. Peat bogs are wetland areas that are home to thousands of plant and animal species and are huge carbon sinks. When we remove peat from peat bogs for horticulture, we not only damage the homes of these species but we also release the carbon in to the atmosphere, therefore directly negatively contributing to climate change. As we extract peat, we also take far too much from the peat bog and this makes peat grown houseplants wholly unsustainable. Peat bogs grow at 1mm a year, meaning the bogs that companies have extracted, may take thousands of years to regenerate.
This is why Harriets Plants is 100% peat free and no peat bogs were harmed when growing these plants.
Why virgin plastic free?
Harriets Plants uses no virign plastic pots and instead recycles nursery pots from local garden centres to utilise for growing.
We also use coir pots, which are made from coconut fibres to create a 100% compostable and degradable pot over time. These coir pots are sustainably sourced and support women with fair paid work in Sri Lanka.
Why Chemical free?
Harriets Plants is against the use of pesticides and un-natural chemicals. We grow our peat free houseplants following organic practices and never use harmful chemicals within the nursery. We are a biodynamic houseplant nursery that focuses on working with the natural environment to grow hardier and more environmentally friendly houseplants to the UK.
What are 100% UK grown houseplants?
Did we mention we are 100% UK grown. All the houseplants within the nursery are grown right here in the UK. This means the whole process from seed sowing, propagating and growing a full houseplant, happens right under one glass roof. No plant imports take place at Harriets Plants.
What are Sustainable houseplants?
As a whole practice, Harriets Plants grows sustainable houseplants for the UK. This encompoasses peat free, chemical free, virgin plastic free and 100% UK grown houseplants. All of the houseplants on this website are sustainably grown and follow organic practices. The perfect gift for the eco warrior in your life.
